大家认识英语单词sympathy吗？
当你想用英语向某人表达sympathy（同情）时，是否不知道该说些什么？
Sympathy的中英文解释如下：
同情（心），理解 (an expression of) understanding and care for someone else's suffering
注意：sympathy一定是针对坏事。
例如：
- The president has sent a message of sympathy to the relatives of the dead soldiers. 总统已经向阵亡士兵的家属发去了唁电。
- I don't have much sympathy for her - I think she's brought her troubles on herself. 我不太同情她——我觉得她是在自找麻烦。
当朋友丢失重要东西，生病或亲人去世时，我们往往需要说些什么来安慰朋友。很多人发现，用中文说都比较困难，何况用英文来表达。
今天，我们就来看看，外国人在这些场合，是如何用合适的英语来表达同情的（sympathy）的。
1. 朋友亲人去世
下面的英语句子，都是在朋友亲人去世的场合可以使用的常见句型，但是非常正式，因此更适合不是过于亲密的朋友。
- I am writing to express my sincere condolences（哀悼） on the death of your (wife/son/grandmother, etc.).
- Please accept our deepest sympathies.
在这种场合，人们往往会避免使用英语单词 death 或 die，通常的做法如下：
- I was so sorry to hear about your loss/the sad news about your sister.
如果你对死者比较了解，还可以用英语说一些赞美死者的话。这时，我们通常谈论对死者的回忆（ memories ），例如：
- Your dad/brother was such a lovely person/was always kind to me, etc.
- I have so many wonderful memories of your dad.
如果你不认识死者，可以谈一谈你朋友的感受，例如：
- I know how much Peter meant to you. （我知道Peter对你是多么的重要）
- It's never easy to lose a parent.
- I can't imagine how you must feel.
我们还可以谈一些可以安慰朋友的事情，例如：
- I hope you can find solace（安慰） in the fact that … (formal)
- I'm sure you will take comfort （安慰）from …
如果某人告诉你他生病了，或者他失业了，你可以向下面这样用英语表达sympathy：
- I'm really sorry to hear that.
如果这个人跟你很熟，你的话语可以更随便一些：
- That really sucks. 这太糟糕了
对于不是很严肃的事情，你可以这样说：
- That's a shame. 真遗憾
- That's awful/terrible. 太糟糕了
- What a pity!
- Poor you!
- Better luck next time.
通常，除了表达同情外，我们往往还需要说一些支持朋友之类的话语，例如：
- I want you to know that we're here to support you.
- We are thinking of you at this difficult time.
- I'm here for you if you need anything. (非正式）
- Do let me know if there's anything I can do to help. (非正式）
