本期题目:

The millennial generation now makes up most of the world’s workforce. While many from previous generations say they have no work ethic, they say they just want a better life-work balance. Do you think millennials have a lesser work ethic? How would you describe your work ethic?

请听罗罡的回答!

Hello everyone, many thanks for listening. Before jumping to the conclusion of whether millennials have a lesser work ethic, let’s define work ethic. A definition agreed by leading scholars depicts it as a cultural norm that advocates being personally accountable and responsible for the work one does and is based on a belief that work has intrinsic value. Then, do millennials, the generation born approximately in 1980 to 1994, fulfill the above mentioned criteria? My answer is yes. Millennials don’t necessarily have a lesser work ethic.

The misunderstanding of millennials might be caused by some characteristics of them. Firstly, Millennials can be shortcut-takers. They want to get tasks done in the most efficient, least time-consuming way possible and squeeze out the max results. Seeking shortcuts is not slacking off. As demonstrated in a survey from Bentley University in 2012, half of the millennials interviewed were willing to work long hours and weekends to achieve career success.

Additionally, millennials believe in life, not work-life balance. Work is not everything millennials want in life. They would like to have time for their friends, family and other small pleasures. They work to live, not live to work. Being fired for “not having enough work ethic”, Michelle Phan, a fashion lover restarted as a makeup blogger and YouTuber and now owns a company with an expected revenue of $120 million in 2015. When the right millennials meet the right job, their work ethic couldn’t be stronger.

As a millennial, I strive to maintain great work ethic simply because I don’t want to disappoint those who hire me and have faith in me. In the workplace, we should judge people in specific context with their personal merits rather than their generation. Being open-minded, flexible and viewing conflicts case by case, a company can realize sustainable development.

Thank you very much!

The millennial work ethic

By Erin Heilman

The Baltimore Sun

Dear previous employer,

You may think that you have gotten the best of me, but you have not. I am a millennial. You may think that you have put me in a bad spot, but you have not. I am a millennial. You may think that you can threaten me, but I am not afraid. I am a millennial.

I was told from the time I was a baby that I was loved and special. Does this make me a worse person? No, it makes me strong and confident. And you may take my confidence for arrogance, but don’t be confused. I am confident because I have been guided by the teachers, mentors and loved ones in my life. I have studied history, biology, chemistry, writing, algebra, theology, music and social sciences, and I am better for it. I have moved from my hometown to another state, and I am stronger for it. I have met hundreds of people different from myself, and I am wiser for it.

So, when you tell me I can’t work from home, when you tell me I can’t have more time off, I’ll tell you goodbye. Because when I grew up, people told me I could be anything. They told me I didn’t have to settle for “good enough”.

These are the reasons why I left your company. You view me as difficult, I say I am uncompromising. Maybe you think I am not dedicated because I prefer to go home to my family by 5 pm. I say I put my family first. The world is changing — not slowly, but quickly.

We are the generation rising. And you’ll see a new kind of workplace, where family comes first.

When you say that millennials are the “me” generation, you miss the point. We know there is more to life than work. We know that family, friends, laughter and memories matter so much more than working until you’re dog tired.

So think what you might about millennials. We are the optimistic future. While you reflect on the “good old days” and tell me “that’s what’s wrong with the world today”, I will continue to make the world better.

We are the voices you hear now. We were quiet at first, but we are growing louder, and soon you will hear us shouting from the tops of mountains. As millennials, we fight to make our world fair. We see injustice and we act. We have been raised to know that we matter and each life matters. We demand better care, better government, better education, better technology, better food and better working conditions. And you will fade and we will brighten as your generation did in your time. Now it is our time.

耍个乖,赞咯!
